Year 8 Take on International Street Food Challenge at Hatherop
As part of their Leavers’ Programme, Year 8 enjoyed a fantastic and engaging day centred around an International Street Food Challenge. Working in small teams, pupils were tasked with creating a unique street food concept inspired by global cuisines. They had to consider multiple aspects of real-world food enterprise, from budgeting and ingredient sourcing, to customer appeal, flavour, presentation, and sustainability.
The day began with a trip to the local supermarket, where teams worked within strict budget constraints to source their ingredients. This required careful planning, price comparison, and group decision making, all valuable life skills in action.

Back at school, pupils got to work preparing their dishes. Each team demonstrated creativity and teamwork in bringing their international flavours to life, with a wide variety of dishes on offer, ranging from Asian fusion wraps to South American street snacks. As part of the challenge, teams took part in taste tests, explained the inspiration behind their food, and delivered a presentation on how they had made their concept appealing to a target market.
The judges were impressed not only with the taste and originality of the food, but also the professionalism and enthusiasm with which the pupils approached the task.
It was a brilliant day full of energy, learning, and laughter, a perfect blend of fun and valuable experience as the Year 8 pupils head towards the end of their time at Hatherop.
