Inspection Reports

We are delighted to share the findings of our latest Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection, which confirms that Hatherop Castle School meets all Independent School Standards across every area of school life. The report recognises the strength of our leadership, the quality of teaching, the breadth of our curriculum and, above all, the outstanding care and support provided to every child. It also highlights our nurturing environment, where pupils are encouraged to achieve their full academic potential while developing confidence, kindness, resilience and a genuine love of learning.

Inspectors recognised that our vision is brought to life every day through ambitious teaching, exceptional pastoral care and a wealth of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. They noted that leaders and staff act in the best interests of pupils, that children thrive in a broad and engaging curriculum, and that the school successfully fosters a respectful, inclusive community where pupils enjoy the adventure of childhood.

Independent schools are inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate on behalf of the Department for Education to ensure they meet the required standards. Below are just some of the many highlights from our latest inspection, with a link to the full report available at the end of the page.

What they said about our pupils

Our pupils thrive in a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum, making good progress as teachers adapt learning effectively to meet individual needs.

Pupils demonstrate positive attitudes to learning, showing confidence, curiosity and enthusiasm both in the classroom and beyond.

Our school community is built on kindness and respect. Pupils collaborate well, celebrate one another’s achievements and contribute positively to school life.

Pupils enjoy a wealth of opportunities beyond the classroom, developing their talents through an extensive programme of sport, creative arts, leadership and extra-curricular activities.

Pupils of all abilities, including those with SEND and those learning English as an additional language, are well supported through tailored teaching and specialist guidance, enabling them to learn effectively and flourish.

What they said about learning

Our broad, balanced and engaging curriculum combines academic, creative and technological subjects, inspiring pupils to develop a wide range of knowledge, skills and interests.

Teachers use secure subject knowledge, carefully planned lessons and engaging teaching methods to challenge pupils, build confidence and help every child make good progress.

As pupils move through the school, specialist teaching across subjects including science, computing, languages, music and the expressive arts enables them to deepen their understanding and extend their learning.

Our innovative electives programme allows older pupils to explore new interests and develop practical skills in areas such as robotics, business studies, sports psychology, countryside conservation and child development, preparing them for the future.

Learning is carefully structured so that pupils build on previous knowledge, think independently and apply their skills across a wide range of subjects, both inside and beyond the classroom.

What they say about the Early Years

Our Early Years setting is recognised as effective and well led, with a nurturing environment where every child is encouraged to develop curiosity, confidence and a love of learning.

Staff skilfully tailor activities to each child’s individual needs, promoting language, social development and ensuring children make good progress towards their learning goals.

From Nursery onwards, children develop strong early reading skills through high-quality phonics teaching and, by the end of Reception, are confident readers who can spell common words independently.

Children build secure mathematical understanding through engaging, hands-on learning, developing confidence as they identify shapes, solve problems and explore mathematical concepts.

Thoughtfully planned activities, expert teaching and a detailed understanding of every child ensure pupils are well prepared for a successful transition into Year 1.

What they say about Boarding

Our boarding environment is welcoming, comfortable and nurturing, providing pupils with a true home from home where they feel safe, happy and supported.

Dedicated boarding staff care for every child with kindness, ensuring pupils’ pastoral needs are met while encouraging independence, confidence and personal growth.

Boarders benefit from structured homework sessions supervised by teaching staff, helping them to develop effective study habits, independence and excellent time management skills.

A varied programme of evening and weekend activities enriches the boarding experience, giving pupils opportunities to try new activities, develop friendships and make the most of life at Hatherop.
