Hatherop Fencers Compete at British Youth Fencing Championship Finals

Two Hatherop Castle School pupils represented the school at the prestigious British Youth Fencing Championship Finals last weekend at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

One pupil qualified for the Under 12 Foil event, while the second earned qualification in both the Under 12 Foil and Epee categories, an exceptional achievement at national level. To qualify for the finals, competitors were required to finish within the top eight at their regional championships or achieve a significant international result, highlighting the extremely high standard of the competition.

Both pupils fenced brilliantly throughout the weekend, earning hard fought victories against some of the strongest young fencers in the country and demonstrating tremendous determination, resilience and sportsmanship.

Reflecting on the experience, one pupil commented:
“That was great fun, though the standard here is incredible.”

Another added:
“It was amazing and we will both be back next year to improve our results.”

The pupils were accompanied by Hatherop Castle School fencing coach, Neil Bromley, who supported a further 28 qualifiers he coaches across the region.

Neil commented:
“It was an exhausting but exhilarating weekend where everyone raised their game and fenced their best.”

The weekend was made even more memorable for Neil, who was recently recognised by British Fencing and awarded a medal for his services to the sport.

Speaking about the honour, Neil said:
“It is a great honour to be recognised for introducing over 5,000 children to the sport.”

We are incredibly proud of both pupils for their achievements and look forward to following their continued progress in the sport.
