Academic Aspire Pupils Take on the Winton Cup at Stowe School

Pupils from the Year 6 Academic Aspire programme at Hatherop Castle School recently travelled to Stowe School to take part in the prestigious Winton Cup, an exciting academic enrichment event designed to challenge pupils’ thinking, discussion and problem solving skills.

Competing alongside pupils from other leading independent prep schools, the Hatherop pupils were assessed throughout the day on their teamwork, articulation, creativity and ability to think critically across a range of engaging workshops.

The event began with an inspiring keynote talk focused on the theme of ‘attention’, encouraging pupils to reflect on how closely we observe the world around us and whether we truly notice the finer details in everyday life. The talk set the tone for a day filled with deep thinking, lively discussion and intellectual curiosity.

Throughout the day, pupils took part in five interactive workshops covering a range of academic subjects:

Politics Debate Workshop

Pupils took part in a parliament style debate after voting on the motion that ‘Social Media Should Be Banned’. They explored a variety of viewpoints, developed persuasive arguments and confidently defended their opinions while listening respectfully to others.

Art History Workshop

In Art History, pupils analysed a range of artworks from different historical periods, exploring how art reflects changes in society, culture and human experience over time.

History Workshop

Pupils were challenged to rewrite risk assessments for a number of unusual and historically dangerous activities. They then discussed how ideas surrounding happiness, entertainment and leisure have evolved throughout history.

Philosophy and Religion Workshop

The Philosophy and Religion session explored the question: ‘Does having more possessions make you happy?’ Pupils considered the issue from multiple perspectives, including the teachings and values of Buddhism.

Geography Settlement Challenge

In Geography, pupils designed their own settlements while following strict planning guidelines and requirements. They carefully considered which amenities and features would help create a happy, thriving and sustainable community.

The Winton Cup provided an excellent opportunity for Hatherop Castle School pupils to extend their learning beyond the classroom, while developing confidence, communication skills and academic ambition. The day was both challenging and inspiring, encouraging pupils to think deeply, express themselves clearly and collaborate effectively with others.

At Hatherop Castle School, opportunities such as the Winton Cup form an important part of the school’s commitment to nurturing curiosity, independent thinking and a lifelong love of learning through its Academic Aspire programme.
