Reception Class Explores Remembrance and Celebrates Diwali

This week, Reception at Hatherop Castle School has been immersed in a journey of learning, creativity, and cultural exploration.

The week began with a poignant focus on remembrance, as the children honoured those who fought in the war. Demonstrating respect and empathy, they explored the significance of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance. Through a variety of creative activities, they brought the poppy to life—winding red wool around a poppy frame, assembling poppies using loose parts, and painting vibrant poppy artworks with paint sticks. A special highlight was Miss Gaussen’s collection of wartime memorabilia, which she kindly shared with the children, bringing history vividly to life.

Later in the week, the focus shifted to celebrating Diwali, the festival of light. Reception embraced the vibrant traditions of this festival, beginning with the captivating story of Rama and Sita. The children enthusiastically recreated the tale using shadow puppets they designed and crafted themselves. Their creativity shone as they painted colourful Rangoli patterns and sculpted traditional diva lamps from clay, capturing the essence of this joyous celebration.

At Hatherop Castle School, we believe in nurturing curiosity and cultural awareness through hands-on experiences. This week, Reception not only deepened their understanding of historical and cultural traditions but also showcased their boundless creativity and enthusiasm for learning.
