Hatherop Castle Honours Its Special Operations Executive History

Hatherop Castle School has marked an important chapter in its history with a special Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving, honouring the personnel of Special Training School 45 (STS 45), the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and other Allied Services who trained and served at Hatherop Castle during the Second World War.

The school was privileged to welcome dignitaries and serving military personnel, alongside pupils, staff and members of the wider community, for the commemorative service at St Nicholas Church. The congregation then returned to Hatherop Castle for the unveiling and dedication of a permanent memorial plaque.

During the Second World War, Hatherop Castle became home to STS 45 and played its part in the work of the Special Operations Executive. The service provided an opportunity not only to commemorate those connected with this remarkable period in the Castle’s history, but also to ensure their stories continue to be understood by future generations.

For today’s Hatherop pupils, the occasion offered a powerful connection between history and the place in which they learn every day. The buildings and grounds around them are more than the setting for their education; they are part of a much wider story.

Understanding this heritage helps bring history beyond the classroom, encouraging pupils to consider the experiences of those who came before them and the importance of remembrance, service and responsibility.
