Drop Everything And Read!

3R have been thoroughly enjoying their DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) sessions, taking time out of their busy school day to pause, pick up a book and simply enjoy reading.

The children have loved exploring a wide range of books and making the most of these quiet moments to settle in and immerse themselves in a story. DEAR sessions are an important part of developing a positive reading culture at Hatherop, helping children to see reading not simply as something they do in lessons, but as something to enjoy for its own sake.

Regular independent reading helps to build fluency, broaden vocabulary and develop comprehension, while exposing children to new ideas, characters, places and perspectives. Just as importantly, giving children the freedom to choose what they read helps foster independence and curiosity, encouraging them to discover the authors, genres and subjects that genuinely capture their imagination.

It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm for books growing within 3R, with children eagerly swapping recommendations, discussing favourite characters and sharing the stories they have particularly enjoyed.

Creating lifelong readers starts with giving children the time and space to fall in love with books, and judging by 3R, we certainly have some real bookworms in our midst!
