Year 7 Pupil Reflects on Helen & Douglas House Visit

My name is Theodore. I am 11 years old and a Year 7 pupil. Last week, I attended a School Council meeting where a representative from Helen & Douglas House visited to talk to us about the upcoming Santa Run in early December.

For anyone who doesn’t know, Helen & Douglas House (founded in 1982 by Sister Frances) is a hospice that supports children living with serious and life-limiting conditions. Their aim is to give every child the chance to experience joy, comfort, and meaningful moments, whether that’s during their childhood or, sadly, towards the end of their life. It’s hard to imagine what it must feel like not knowing whether you’ll be here next Christmas. That is why I felt so inspired by the bravery of the children Helen & Douglas House cares for, and by the kindness and dedication of the staff who support them every day.

They don’t do it for money or recognition, what matters to them is making life better for these children and their families. Arnold Schwarzenegger writes in his book Be Useful about the importance of putting others first. He compares it to firefighters who rush to help others even when their own homes might be in danger. That same spirit of giving back is something all of us can show. And giving back doesn’t have to be huge. You can take part in the Santa Run, attend the comedy gala, watch the charity skydive, or join the bubble race, every small act helps.

This Christmas, Helen & Douglas House is hoping to raise £66,000 to support the 78 children currently in their care. You can find out more at their official website: helenanddouglas.org.uk.

Remember, even the smallest effort can help make this Christmas a little brighter for those seventy-eight children.
