Magical Owl Visit for Reception Pupils
Reception pupils enjoyed a truly magical learning experience when a group of magnificent owls visited the school for a hands-on wildlife session.
The visit brought learning vividly to life, giving children the opportunity to meet several owl species and explore their fascinating adaptations. Pupils discovered how specially structured feathers allow owls to fly almost silently and were amazed to learn about their extraordinary hearing, with some species able to locate prey using sound alone.

One particularly memorable moment was learning how the colour of an owl’s eyes can reveal when it hunts, darker eyes often indicate nocturnal activity, while lighter eyes suggest daytime or dawn and dusk hunting patterns.
The highlight of the session was the chance to hold the owls. With careful guidance, pupils took turns experiencing these beautiful birds up close, listening to their gentle sounds and observing their unique characteristics.
Encounters like this inspire curiosity, nurture empathy and spark a lifelong interest in the natural world, reinforcing the school’s commitment to hands-on, experiential learning.
