Inspiring Future Engineers: Prep 7 & 8 Visit the Williams Formula One STEM Centre
Our Prep 7 and Prep 8 pupils recently experienced an extraordinary day of learning and discovery during their visit to the Williams Formula One STEM Centre, one of the UK’s most exciting and innovative educational environments.
From the moment they arrived, pupils were fully immersed in the world of high-performance engineering, where science, technology, engineering and mathematics are brought to life in a real-world context. Designed to align closely with the national curriculum, the programme offered a unique opportunity for pupils to deepen their understanding of STEM subjects beyond the classroom, while also exploring the wide range of careers available within the motorsport industry.

Throughout the day, pupils engaged in a series of hands-on, problem-solving activities that challenged their thinking and encouraged collaboration. Taking on the role of engineers, they explored key concepts such as aerodynamics, materials science and design technology, areas fundamental to the development of Formula One cars. Activities such as engineering design challenges required pupils to apply mathematical reasoning, scientific knowledge and creative thinking to develop and test their own ideas, mirroring the processes used by real F1 teams.
A highlight for many was the opportunity to explore the Williams Heritage Museum, where pupils were able to trace the evolution of engineering innovation over time. This provided valuable context, helping them to understand how advances in technology are driven by research, experimentation and continual refinement, principles that underpin both STEM education and modern industry.

The visit also offered pupils an invaluable insight into future career pathways. Through discussions and interactive sessions, they discovered the breadth of roles within Formula One, from aerodynamics and race engineering to data analysis, marketing and logistics, demonstrating how STEM skills can open doors to a wide range of exciting professions. Experiences like this are proven to significantly increase young people’s interest in STEM careers, helping them to see the relevance and application of their studies in the real world.
Beyond the technical knowledge gained, the day fostered essential transferable skills including teamwork, communication, resilience and critical thinking. Pupils approached each challenge with enthusiasm and curiosity, demonstrating impressive levels of engagement throughout.
It was a truly memorable and impactful day, and who knows, perhaps among our Prep 7 and 8 cohort are the engineers, innovators and problem-solvers of the future.
