Prep 3’s Aboriginal Art, Lamingtons, and Campfire Fun
Prep 3’s topic this term is Australia, so it was only right that they should celebrate Australia Day, which formally takes place this Sunday! The children embarked on a day filled with adventure and discovery, immersing themselves in the rich tapestry of Australian culture.
The day began with the creation of vibrant Aboriginal art. Using traditional colours and symbols, the children expressed their creativity and learned about the significance of these ancient designs. Their eyes sparkled with excitement as they painted, each brushstroke telling a story of the land Down Under.

Next, the young adventurers turned into little chefs, making Lamingtons, Australia’s favourite cake. The kitchen was filled with laughter and the sweet aroma of chocolate and coconut as the children carefully dipped sponge cakes into chocolate icing and rolled them in desiccated coconut. The joy of creating their own treats was evident on their faces as they proudly displayed their delicious masterpieces.
The adventure continued with a taste of the wild side – edible insect bushtucker! With a mix of curiosity and bravery, the children sampled these unique snacks, giggling at the novelty of eating something so unusual. It was a moment of shared courage and camaraderie, as they encouraged each other to take a bite.

After a hearty Aussie-style lunch of meat pie and Peach Melba, the children gathered to learn the unofficial national anthem, “Waltzing Matilda,” and the cheerful “Kookaburra” song. Their voices filled the room, each note a celebration of their newfound knowledge and appreciation for Australian culture.
The grand finale was a campfire outside in the new outdoor classroom. As the sun set, the children sat around the fire, singing their hearts out and enjoying Tim Tam biscuits. They pretended they were out in the bush, surrounded by the sounds of the great Australian outdoors. The crackling fire and the chorus of their voices created a magical atmosphere, one that they would remember for years to come.

And just like that, the day was over. The mass of surfers, lifeguards, koalas, kangaroos, cricketers, farmers, and goannas went home with heaps of stories to tell and a rather lovely piece of Aboriginal artwork to treasure. It was a day of adventure, learning, and the pure joy of childhood, all wrapped up in the spirit of Australia.
