A Celebration of Creativity, Arts Week at Hatherop Castle School

At Hatherop Castle School, the arts aren’t just part of the curriculum, they’re part of who we are. Every year, we dedicate an entire week to celebrating creativity, imagination and expression across every year group, and this year’s Arts Week was nothing short of extraordinary.

From Reception to Prep 8, children stepped away from their usual timetable and immersed themselves in a rich and varied programme designed to ignite curiosity, awaken talent, and foster a lifelong love of the arts. The castle was alive with colour, music, movement and innovation as our pupils explored everything from ceramics to choreography, textiles to theatre, and digital animation to design technology.

A Curriculum Reimagined

Throughout the week, lessons gave way to hands-on workshops, creative collaborations and off-site experiences. Children in Pre-Prep delighted in felting, cookery, music inspired by Holst’s The Planets, forest school, pottery, and intergalactic-themed abstract art. Meanwhile, our Prep pupils experienced a remarkable variety of artistic disciplines, including:

  • Mosaic design, willow sculpture
  • Ceramics, batik
  • Musical theatre, drama workshops
  • Animation, stop-motion film-making
  • Graffiti, pastel auroras
  • Trips to local schools, arts venues
  • DT workshops at Westonbirt, live experiences at the Morgan Motor Company

There was a wonderful sense of purpose throughout the school, whether it was pupils preparing costumes for the final showcase, rehearsing an original play, or exploring art history through the lens of Miró, Britto, and Basquiat.

Why a Week Like This Matters

Arts Week is more than just an opportunity to do something different, it’s a chance for every child to discover new passions and hidden talents. The benefits reach far beyond the art room:

  • Creative thinking and innovation are sharpened
  • Collaboration and communication flourish in group projects and performances
  • Confidence grows, especially in children who may not usually find the spotlight
  • Emotional expression finds a safe and powerful outlet
  • Wellbeing improves, as pupils immerse themselves in meaningful, hands-on learning

By giving children the freedom to experiment and explore, we also help them build essential skills for the future, resilience, curiosity, imagination and empathy.

At Hatherop Castle, we believe in the power of the arts to transform learning, unlock potential, and inspire the minds of tomorrow. Arts Week is a shining example of our ethos in action, adventurous, ambitious, and full of character.

We can’t wait to do it all again next year.
