STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Each year group has a timetabled slot each week to design, test and problem solve using a range of equipment, techniques and strategies. Pupils are encouraged to be curious, explore their ideas and to discover of what they are capable. Pupils challenge themselves and complete their work to a high standard, allowing them to discover the satisfaction of a job well done.
These lessons enable pupils to develop knowledge and understanding of the technological world around them, to explore how and why things work and to develop their own imaginative ideas, plan their making, accurately carry out their plans and evaluate what they are doing.
STEAM gives pupils a variety of opportunities to discover the world around them giving them the skills they need to be curious and active learners. Practical projects teach pupils valuable making skills which increase their fine and gross motor skills as well as appreciating the challenge of seeing a project through to completion. As the complexity of skills and knowledge increase through the school, pupils learn to be resilient when facing new and greater challenges in order to complete their projects. By learning to follow the design, make and evaluate process, pupils learn how to plan their work and the importance of reflection to help them with future choices.
STEAM also develops many transferable skills such as team work, planning, and communication which equip pupils with the confidence to tackle the ever demanding world that we live in.
