The world of Terrific Toys

In Reception this term we will be delving into the world of terrific toys.  From wooden blocks to remote control and computerised toys, the children will be learning about how toys have changed and developed through time!

Our topic kicked off by talking about the wonderful toys we had for Christmas. Drawing and painting pictures of them ready for a new display to adorn our classroom walls.  We are also turning our role play area into a toy shop and have been busy gathering different toys and books to ‘sell’ in our shop and we will be getting to grips with adding up money, come and have a browse!

We will be reading stories based around toys such as “Dogger” by Shirley Hughes and “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” by Hans Christian Anderson which also encompass lots of PSED topics such as feelings and sharing.   Reception are very much looking forward to our visiting Toys Workshop later in the term (provided by The Wilson, Cheltenham Art Gallery) where the children will have the chance to find out about and handle toys from over the eras, looking at different materials as well as how the toys work.

Terrific toys lends itself beautifully to a hands-on and interactive approach to learning encompassing lots of opportunities for learning and exploration within the seven early learning goals.  Come and see our terrific work about terrific toys!
