The importance of taking time to reconnect
Last week the children in Prep 5 took some time out to take part in some valuable team building exercises. Mrs Houghton-Brown gave each table a packet of spaghetti and mini marshmallows and using only those two products they had to design a structure to span a gap of 20cm between two tables.
The children learnt that while one piece of spaghetti is not very strong, if you use lots of pieces you can build a strong, tall tower. Each piece takes a little of the weight – of the tower and of whatever you place on top. The weight is the result of gravity, which pulls everything vertically downwards. That’s why it’s important to ensure that the tower doesn’t lean too much – and that’s also why towers are normally thick at the base and thinner at the top.
They all enjoyed the activity and lots of discussion and healthy competition was apparent!
