Tasting food out of this world

Prep 1 were challenged to decide which fruit or vegetables were best suited to be grown in space as part of their new topic.

The children identified different plant types, before classifying them according to which part is edible – leaves, roots, flowers, seeds or more than one part. The children then proposed which they felt best met the given criteria and gave reasons to justify their choices; potatoes, beetroot and spinach received the most votes due to the size of the plant, the nutrition they provide and of course the taste.

The session ended with the opportunity to try freeze-dried ice cream, just like astronauts enjoy in space. Although we all agreed the texture was unusual, the children were unanimous on declaring it delicious!
