Sports Review – How do we master the serve in tennis?

Highlights from the week in PE – Prep 4 Tennis

Prep 4 have been developing their tennis serve this week, with the focus being length and accuracy in and around the service box. Some are beginning to work towards linking various progressions in order to perform the overhead technique.

Girls’ sport

The U8 girls played in their first ever match against CMP on Monday. They were all very excited and they played and worked brilliantly together as a team. The girls used the space effectively and dribbled the ball confidently on the astro surface. The final score was 8-1 to Hatherop. Coach’s player of the match was Saskia.

U9 girls played against Cricklade Manor Prep (CMP) on Monday 1 October. The initial team played extremely well and were able to score 4 great goals going into the second half with a 4-0 lead. Our next group of girls found the play more challenging and were not able to build on our score. Unfortunately, CMP came back well and scored 5 goals, overturning our first half lead to win 5-4. Coach’s player of the match was shared between Atia and Ottilia.

The U11 girls travelled to Cricklade manor. We played a short match due to back to back matches planned. The girls played well when we managed to play with some width. This didn’t happen quite enough for the quick surface that we were playing on. Although we were the better side, a couple of lapses in concentration cost us the win. Some very encouraging signs and a clear improvement from the beginning of the season. The final result was 2-2 with goals from Matilda and Rose. Coach’s player of the match – Isla with some great saves.

Boys’ sport

U12 A and B v Dauntseys – This was a really great fixture for the senior boys to play in. The games were fiercely contested and played with lots of good passing and running rugby. Both games provided strong attacks which worried the opposition’s defence although Dauntsey came out victorious in both games. Coach’s player of the Match: Felix and Noah. Score U12As lost 30-40. U12Bs lost 60-50.

U11 v CMP – This was a great improvement from the previous game. Tries were scored from Freddy and Henry to put Hatherop in the lead. However, some missed tackles allowed CMP into the game and after dominating most of the match, Hatherop lost 15-30. Coach’s player of the match Henry.

U10A v CMP – A cracking match at CMP in which Hatherop U10As ultimately came second. The boys made a slow start and missed a few crucial tackles which allowed the CMP boys to rack up a few tries and grow in confidence. That said the boys worked hard, as a team, and moved the ball through the numbers for a few tries of their own. The boys displayed great intensity in defence but their early missed tackles ultimately divided the two teams. A close-run contest indeed with the final score being 10 – 9 to CMP. Coach’s of the Match: Lucas.

U10B v CMP – The boys played well and their rucking and passing improved as the game went on. HCS won 9-3. Coach’s player of the match: Felix (4 tries) but good performances from Arthur, Alex and Tucker.

U9A and B v Pinewood – Some strong tackling and running brought Hatherop back into the game but Pinewood proved too strong. The B team put in a great performance with huge commitment in the tackle and some strong running with the ball. HCS won 30-15 and 10-5. Coach’s player of the Match: As Cal & Bs Freddy.

U9 v CMP – Some pleasing performances against CMP on Monday. We played in a mixed-ability group which allowed everyone the opportunity to play. The tackling and strong running lines were impressive However, the ball always needs to out to the space! Lost 20-30 Coach’s player of the Match: Hugo Streeter

U8 v CMP – The U8s were brimming with excitement and enjoyed the whole experience of match day. Some great tries were scored and some wonderful play from Finn, Otto and Somerset in particular . Coach’s player of the Match : Otto & Finn
