Burns Night at Hatherop Castle

One of the social highlights at Hatherop Castle is the annual Burns Night dinner, this year was no exception. The enchantment begins with the torch lit entrance to the castle accompanied by the atmospheric sound of the bagpipes putting you in the Scottish frame of mind before you even enter the front door. A warming fire and a glass of fizz awaits you in the great hall for pre-dinner drinks.

Dinner is served in the transformed dining room, set up to provide as much Scottish flair as can be managed in the heart of the Cotswolds, a delicious 4-course dinner is served with the haggis arriving with the full fanfare of the piper, chef and whiskey bearer. A full address to the haggis along with traditional toasts involving not an inconsiderable amount of whiskey provides lively entertainment during the dinner.

The evening continues with Scottish Country Dancing to a live band and a caller in the front hall. This really is a site not to be missed with teachers, parents and friends all joining together – in varying states of competence, to twirl and jig around the hall, with laughter echoing through the rooms, reminiscent of the parties this great house must have witnessed frequently in its past.

This annual PA event not only provides a wonderful social, fun filled evening it also raises funds for the various school based projects it supports.
