Computer Science

Technology is interwoven through all parts of life, as well as every career, from law, to medicine to the arts. Our Computer Science curriculum reflects the increased emphasis on technology in the 21st century, and ensures our children are computer literate and ready to take on the challenges of a technological world.

Coding and programming form a large part of the curriculum, with children using a variety of programs and applications to learn programming skills. We use the popular Scratch program to build knowledge and confidence and we are introducing Arduino technology with children in middle and upper school.

Lego robotics combines skills in engineering and programming. The children are given a challenge to perform, and must design and build a robot fit for purpose, and then programme it to achieve the task required. Their proficiency in doing so has led Hatherop Castle’s Lego robotics team to win the regional finals of the First Lego League in 2015.

The children also enjoy the 3D modelling topic where they are using software to design, edit and print objects and designs on a 3D printer during their lessons. Topics have ranged from transport to skylines and famous buildings.

We place a great deal of emphasis on internet safety topics. This is an overarching topic that features in all Computing lessons as well as being an important unit of work for all pupils in the summer term. Parent workshops are held at regular intervals to ensure parents are up to date with the latest internet safety guidelines.
