In full summer gloss, they caught the eye of Hatherop Castle’s Head of Art as she walked through the grounds and by the time Prep 5 arrived for their art lesson, this seed of inspiration had grown into an idea for a decorative motif. The art room is housed in the Castle’s old Orangery, its walls ablaze with colour and creativity. The light in here is phenomenal. In the gorgeous Dr Moorhead room, the Choir is warming up. Tonight they are all taking part in the Upper School Production, so the Head of Music is advising them to go easy on their voices. Even so, the sound they produce is achingly beautiful. They are working hard, but their faces, reflected in the polished lid of the grand piano, are smiling. Later, in the new Performing Arts Centre, they proudly show us the retractable seating, the state-of-the-art lighting rig, the beautiful stage. A wonderful resource, without doubt, but it is what they achieve on the stage that really impresses. The enthusiasm. The confidence. It is extraordinary. They will bring the house down.
