Maths

Mathematics is a core subject and as such is given great importance at Hatherop Castle School. It istaught by a dedicated team of teachers whose aims are to help pupils to be confident, interested and stimulated by the work that they do in Maths at whatever level.

Children are taught by their class teachers up to Prep 4. From Prep 5 to prep 8 they are taught by specialist staff in preparation for their Common Entrance or scholarship exams.

In the pre-prep there is a dedicated Maths Room where children go for practical activities. The Reception children think of it as a playroom as they do not realise the important mathematical concepts being learnt through their play and activities!

In the Prep department there is also a Maths Room which is used for Maths lessons throughout the school.

Interactive whiteboards and the computer suite are used to help deliver the maths  curriculum throughout.

Each year we have a visit from “The World of Maths” who bring some challenging problems and puzzles for children throughout the school to solve.                                                In the Lent term the whole school takes part in Number day which is an event to help raise money for the NSPCC and have an enjoyable time participating in an assortment of practical maths activities. Also in this term the Prep 3 children visit Lechlade Garden Centre in order to practise their maths in a real-life situation

We also take part in Mathematical challenges - this year a Prep 5 team have competed at Summer Fields and a Prep 6 team took part in the Monkton Maths and Science Day.

Children also have the opportunity to gain Numeracy badges as they progress through the school. This encourages them to have quick recall of number bonds and multiplication tables.
