Latin

All pupils start Latin in Prep 4. For the first two years the course is very informal and its main aim is to complement their English skills. Comparisons are made between Latin and English words and pupils are encouraged to increase their vocabulary by working out meanings from their knowledge of Latin.

Roman history and Greek mythology form a large part of the course in the first two years and we consider the legacies of archaeology, schooling, housing and many other cultural aspects.

In Prep 6 pupils begin the Cambridge Latin Course and there is a greater emphasis on written work and formal grammar in preparation for 13+ Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations. Non-linguistic studies continue to be a part of the curriculum and pupils learn about the great Greek heroes, domestic life, the city of Rome and Roman Britain.

Frequent use is made of the Cambridge Latin Course website and pupils have the opportunity to consolidate their learning with a wide range of activities and a vocabulary tester.
