English

The English department has just introduced the new Galore Park Scheme, starting in Prep 3 and continued through to Prep 8. The scheme is in line with both the new Independent Curriculum as well as Common Entrance. This has proved exciting and challenging for the pupils whilst all the areas of English remain well represented.

In Reception children follow the renowned Jolly Phonics scheme. This is then supported by objectives from ‘Letters and Sounds’ to help introduce the children to the English language.

In the Prep department set texts are introduced. In Prep 7 and 8 the set texts relate to the theme from the Common Entrance syllabus, which is currently ‘Relationships’.

The Trinity term of Prep 6 sees the introduction of the Literacy Objectives scheme of work, which together with ‘So you really want to learn English’ and ISEB English, takes them through to Common Entrance and Scholarship.

English is the basis for all other subjects. We as a department therefore feel it should be brought to life for the children in as many different ways as possible. This includes: our Literacy day, theatre trips, Spelling Bee, use of interactive whiteboards, constantly updated and accessible libraries, readathons, visits to the school and entrance to a range of different competitions. We are a constantly developing department.

Heads of Department: Miss B Evans (Reception-Prep 4), Mrs A Davis (Prep 5-8)
